I recently completed SANS LDR514 at SANSFIRE 2025 in Washington, DC, where I learned how strategic planning and leadership elevate cybersecurity programs and even won top honors in the labs.

Why I Took LDR514

Bridging Technical Excellence with Strategic Leadership: My Experience at SANSFIRE 2025

An Army General once said that “Leadership is a potent combination of strategy and character.” I had the amazing opportunity a couple weeks ago to take LDR514: Security Strategic Planning, Policy and Leadership at SANSFIRE 2025 in Washington, DC. My instructor, Russell Eubanks, did an outstanding job teaching the course. He brought his vast expertise and real‑world experience to every lesson, making complex topics both understandable and engaging. His insights were invaluable, and I learned so much from his instruction.

Strategy Lessons That Stuck

This course provided me with practical skills and highlighted the importance of strategy in cybersecurity. As the course emphasized, cybersecurity is now more vital and relevant to every part of the organization than ever before. Strategic planning ensures that security initiatives align with organizational objectives, securing not only data but also the business’s mission. Learning to develop engineers and lead teams effectively has given me the tools to build and execute strategic plans that resonate with business executives. I can now better persuade team members, remove obstacles and ensure the well‑being of the team—all in support of the organization’s mission.

Winning the Cyber42 Challenge

A highlight of the week was participating in the challenge portion of the course. I’m proud to say that my team and I won 1st place, achieving the highest score across the 32‑hands‑on labs against the other students in the class and online, which grants you these challenge coins. Shout out to my teammates Anthony Perales and Jahzeer Terrell for their skill and collaboration. The labs were a fantastic way to apply the concepts I learned in class through hands‑on exercises, business case studies and the interactive Cyber42 boardroom simulation. It was a true test of our ability to think strategically and work collaboratively.

Gratitude for the Support

I want to extend a huge thank you to Amazon Web Services (AWS) for sponsoring me to attend this course and to the United States Army Reserve for providing the lodging. Your investment in my personal and professional development is greatly appreciated and will undoubtedly benefit my contributions to the military and civilian sectors. This was an incredible learning experience that I will carry with me for the rest of my career.
